Seek the internationally renowned artist Liu Bolin among pictures of well-known Florentine monuments and more. Known as “the invisible man”, Bolin blends himself into the instantly recognisable backdrops using body painting.
Art, music, theatre, dance, workshops and more merge in this free admission festival as part of the Estate Fiorentina programme. Experimentation is at the heart of this cultural affair with local emerging musicians performing alongside nationally-known artists. Carpentry workshops feature as well as yoga and Kintsugi, making it one not to miss.
Former Irish top model Jean O’Reilly Barlow of Interi presents an exhibition on the history of Spolvero with Florence University of the Arts. The 18th and 19th century prints used to create fresco designs and wall art have been transferred onto canvas through the giclée method (available to purchase), with the originals also on display framed with antique wood moldings and precious gems.
Contemporary circus gets its moment with workshops, concerts and bubbles bursting onto the scene. Taking place as part of Estate Fiorentina, the series also sees an on-site restaurant, pizzeria and cocktail bar available daily from 6.30pm. This week features a concert by the Franco Santarnecchi Waves Orchestra at 9.30pm on August 26, with a circus performance by Augustina Ballestrer and Pablo Censi titled ‘Cia A tope Shhh!’ at 9.30pm on August 27, blending acrobatics and pantomime and using only their bodies to communicate with the audience.
The ANBIMA Youth Orchestras of Lucca and Piedmont perform for the closing of the 69th Puccini Festival at 9pm on August 27 in Torre del Lago’s Gran Teatro Puccini. Among the pieces played will be Dutch composer Jan va der Roost’s Arsenal, James Swearingen’s Invicta, and, of course, Giacomo Puccini with a wind arrangement of Madama Butterfly. The free entry concert also sees Roland Kernen’s A Morricone Portrait, pieces by John Williams, George Gershwin and Pirates of the Caribbean.
See cinema in the relaxed setting of the Anconella Park, with a free-entry film series along the banks of the Arno taking place at 9pm on various dates in August. From science fiction cult classics to Tuscan comedians, the programme also sees book presentations, guided walks and special guests.
Celebrations start to mark the 850th anniversary of the iconic tower of Pisa. The instantly recognizable monument will be honoured with a series of events held over the course of the year, with the programme soon to be announced.
At 6pm on July 20, take part in a guided tour of the Exhibiting exhibition at Manifattura Tabacchi. On display until September 3, the free admission display explores the connection between the site and the production of contemporary art, with a showcase of works built in dialogue with the architecture.
Cinema under the stars, contemporary dance, literature and children’s workshops in an urban farm colour the Estate Fiorentina calendar. Blending culture and agriculture, the greenery is dotted with hay bales where you can enjoy the varied programme, all while dining on healthy food and taking part in outdoor activities.
