Get readingA reading group dedicated to translated literature and literature about translation, with a special focus on practices of feminist translation, takes place in English at Biblioteca Femminista on via Fiesolana 2b until March. Presented as part of The Other Words project coordinated between Edinburgh and Florence, discussions are based around the complex ideas surrounding the translation of literature. February 6 will be a discussion of Brandy Sour by Constantia Soteriou, translated by Lina Protopapa.

Find out moreThe European University Institute (EUI) presents Visions of Europe, a film series mostly unseen in Italy from January to June at Palazzo Buontalenti. The screenings will be followed by debates with prominent experts, including Nathalie Tocci, Tommaso Nannicini and Bill Emmott. The first event will take place on January 29 at 6.30pm, with the Italian premiere of Democracy Under Siege (2024). The documentary follows Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Ann Telnaes of the Washington Post, who recently resigned after 18 years with the newspaper in protest against the censorship of one of her cartoons. In the cartoon, she depicted her editor Jeff Bezos and other prominent figures from tech and media companies kneeling before Donald Trump.

The second edition of the project curated by the artists and teachers of the Academy of Fine Arts, Pantani-Surace and Paolo Parisi. Chambres transforms the hotel into a space for dialogue with the sculpture, paintings, photography, video and installations by Maura Bazzi, Marcela Castañeda Florián, Giovanni Ceruti, Pietro Desirò, Marta Fumanti, Gianluca Garu Paionni, Yasmine Kachni, Maddalena Lotti and Ramona Marano, artists that are attending the Academy of Fine Arts of Florence.

Palazzo Vecchio’s Salone dei Cinquecento is currently home to the Sala Grande exhibition that brings us back to when Giorgio Vasari went about enhancing the most magnificent of the Palazzo’s rooms. On display until March 9 will be La Sala Grande: Giorgio Vasari per Cosimo I De’ Medici, a small but significant display to commemorate the 450th anniversary of the architect and the Grand Duke who both passed away in 1574, and the glorious project that remains at the heart of Florentine civic life.

La croce che fiorisce e le stimmate di Francesco, created to mark the 800th anniversary of the miracle, is a detailed display that was carefully curated by Sonia Chiodo, Giovanni Giura, Anna Pegoretti and Federico Rossi, situated in the winter refectory. Beginning with part of the permanent display in which the sprawling complex and its various functions are illustrated in the bird’s-eye view painting of the monuments that dates to 1718, Santa Croce is contextualized before we move on to the temporary display consisting of paintings and manuscripts that recount the evolution of the iconography of the Stigmata of Saint Francis.

The artisanal workshops led by the “prince of antique dealers”, Stefano Bardini, and his son Ugo in the late 19th and early 20th centuries are the subject of an exhibition that journeys through the tradition of woodwork. Focusing on the artisanal expertise and production that made the Bardini workshops famous, the exhibition displays period objects and accessories which fascinated international patrons attracted to the dream of the Italian Renaissance.
