Apriti Cinema

Apriti Cinema brings a pop-up movie theatre to piazzale degli Uffizi from June 27 to August 27. The free entry programme sees a selection from various festivals such as River to River Florence Indian Film Festival and Florence Korea Film Fest in a truly varied line-up. Screenings are in original language and Italian subtitles, with many films dedicated to art and auteur cinema.

Sotto le Stelle: The Florentine with Ruffino

Florence Dance Festival

The 33rd edition of the popular dance fest is titled Indossare L’arte (Wear Art), with art’s ability to heal, restore and regenerate celebrated through artistic and theatrical dance performances. Under the artistic direction of Marga Nativo and Keith Ferrone, a circular stage immerses audiences in the dance, music, opera and educational shows, with international guests like flamenco dancer Israel Galvàn presenting his award-winning L’età d’oro (The Golden Age). Talented dance groups and choreographers feature both well-known and new stars from countries all over the world. FLODANCE 2.0 perform a piece titled 1943 that reflects on Italian soldiers sent to war and Parisian company Cie Rue Serndip wows with special guest, Sicilian soloist Andrea Marino. As part of the programming, the Florentine Chamber Orchestra plays a tribute to Coldplay, and an evening dedicated to the Meyer Hospital ONLUS and La Milanesiana will be held with Elisabetta Sgarbi. Tickets cost from 10 to 30 euro.

This solo exhibition of works by Claudio Cionini features previously unpublished pieces by the Maremma artist. The theme of the exhibition is big cities, with the Big Apple’s giant avenues and Parisian boulevards expertly grasped in the cityscapes on display at Galleria La Fonderia.

Queer Week

The Shade and Arcigay Firenze Altre Sponde host six days of free admission cultural events, talks, shows and music at Lumen in via del Guarlone 25 for the first edition of Queer Week.  The packed programme features a Drag Show, cinema, a round table, board games, disco party, open mic and more, with Vincenzo D’angelo and Kali Swaid presenting The Florentine at 6pm on June 25 (in English).

Festa di San Giovanni

Following a two-year hiatus, Florence once again celebrates its patron saint, San Giovanni Battista (St. John the Baptist) on June 24 with fantastic fochi (fireworks). Expect the city’s symbol, the giglio (lily), with butterflies and a new weeping willow as part of the dramatic display. Read all about the celebrations.

Yoga Radio Bruno Estate Firenze

From 8pm on June 27, piazza della Santissima Annunziata sees stars such as Gianni Morandi, Elettra Lamborghin, Rocco Hunt, Sonohra and more for the summer music event organized by Radio Bruno. Tickets cost 10 euro, with all proceeds donated to the Tommasino Bacciotti non-profit Foundation that supports families with children hospitalized at the Meyer Pediatric Hospital and grants scholarships for research and medical-scientific projects.

The Duchess Eleonora and "the Spaniards" in Santa Maria Novella

Starting from 11.30am on June 25, every last weekend of the month, there will be guided visits to the sites of the Santa Maria Novella complex related to Eleonora di Toledo to celebrate the 500th anniversary of her birth. The special visits explore the large cloister and the Cappellone degli Spagnoli, allowing us to understand how important the sixteenth-century interventions were on the entire complex, in line with the dictates of the Counter-Reformation. The story of her arrival in 1539 will be told, as well as her impact in the years that followed. Tours last 1hr15mins and cost 2.50 euro for residents of the city of Florence, or 5 euro for non-residents, in addition to the museum entrance ticket (free for residents of the municipality of Florence).
