Urban Sketcher's Spring Festival

The second edition of the international Urban Sketcher meet up starts in Biblioteca delle Oblate on March 21 before continuing in the Oltrarno, with the attendance of internationally renowned watercolour artists like Alex Hillkurtz from Paria who offers a workshop titled ‘The Light of Florence’ at the Istituto de’ Bardi. Even little ones can get involved with a workshop organized at the Oblate on Saturday evening.

Botanica Urbana

Manifattura Tabacchi hosts a spring event dedicated to nature in the city. From an activity for kids dedicated to the discovery of earthworms to a guided walk to explore the greenery of Manifattura Tabacchi, there are workshops and talks galore to celebrate nature’s bounty.

Thomas J Price

A large-scale figurative sculpture will be placed in piazza della Signoria from March 14 to September 14, standing 3.6 metres tall in dialogue with the historical works. Museo Novecento and Palazzo Vecchio dive deeper into his artistic career from March 14 to June 11, drawing our attention to how and why things are made, with references to ancient, classical and neoclassical sculpture.

Shakira-inspired menu + music

Shakira joins forces with Hard Rock Cafe for international women’s month, consisting of a special menu with the pop star’s favourite dishes, like a Hips Don’t Lie cocktail (based on silver tequila with elderflower liquer, strawberries and cucumber), with part of the proceeds donated to educating young girls in Colombia via the Pies Descalzos Foundation. The partnership seeks to promote female empowerment through the unifying power of music with performances held across the month. Breathe Floyd performa a tribute to Pink Floyd at 9pm, March 21, and Living Theory play hits by Linkin Park from 9pm on March 28.

Guided tours of the water purification plant

To mark World Water Day, Publiacqua, in collaboration with the MUS.E Foundation, are offering two free visits (for adults and children aged over six) to discover the water purification plant in Anconella. On the occasion to mark the significance of the water supply systems for the city, groups will be guided to understand the system’s origins and current functions, from Giuseppe Poggi’s impact to engineers Raffaele Canevari and Luigi Del Sarto. Florence Korea Film Fest

The Florence Korea Film Fest comes to Cinema La Compagnia from March 20-29, with the 23rd edition including an homage to the director Na Hong-jin through masterclasses and screenings, with online screenings available for those unable to make the festival. A leader in the Korean noir genre, his 2008 thriller, The Chaser forms part of the lineup, as well as The Wailing, a horror centred around an elderly man in a quiet rural village.

Il Sacro Nell’Arte

Christian teachings and ethical sustainability of the social fabric and political-cultural identity of Europe are at the heart of the exhibition centered around “water” in scripture, held in the Chiostro Grande of the Basilica of Santissima Annunziat. Taking place exactly 775 years after the laying of the first stone which took place on March 25, 1250, artists include Jean Barlow, Fernando Aróztegui, Giovanna Baldini and Luciana Zanchini.

The free admission contemporary art exhibition hosted in the B9 building sees works by Giovanna Graniero, Gabriele Hoxha, Milo Maricelli, Demis Rosa, Nina Silvestri and Chiara Siddu; artists undertaking residencies that began last December. The former factory hosts the works alongside pieces by Zeno Festi, Sara Giacomelli, Francesco Maggiora, Bianca Migliorini and Gaia Lupo. Five ateliers form the exhibition itinerary that are usually reserved for individual research. The exhibition explores the role of the artist in contemporary society, considering artistic communities and their work environments as assets of collective interest. A weekly calendar of dialogues with the artists commences on March 19. Open Wednesday to Sunday, 11am to 7pm, free admission.

COMMUNITY EVENTS

Lady Ripple present a ‘Spring Equinox Happening’ from 6.30-9.30pm on March 21, with all proceeds to benefit the Bee the Ripple charity, creating biodiversity and saving bees. The evening features kundalini yoga and movement, intention setting, creative expression, a fire ceremoney, DJ set, drumming, dancing, food and drinks, for 45 euro. Held at the B.East Gallery. Book your spot.

 

An exhibition titled Dream Weaver by Vittoria Colonna is on show in Serre Torrigiani until April 6, a collection of hand-painted and textile works around the concept of weaving our truths.

 

The Creative People in Florence space at via dei Serragli 58r hosts Modern Calligraphy from 6-8.30pm on March 27, led by Susan. Costing 50 euro, all writing materials, a take home calligraphy kit and mini-aperitivo supplied by the instructor. Slow stitching workshops are organized by Rebecca Hollinger on March 22, allowing you to take some time to slow down, enjoy the company of others, detach from your devices and give yourself a couple of hours to simply work with your hands. No experience necessary.

 

Kristine Jannuzi (@nyccheesechick) hosts a cheese and wine tasting in honour of Women’s History Month, starting at 6pm on March 25 at Amalia Restaurant. Advance tickets required.

 

The Florence Literary Society and Todo Modo co-sponsor an event on March 25 that sees Pulitzer prize winning author Nathan Thrall in conversation about his book A Day in the Life of Abed Salama: Antomy of a Jersualem Tragedy, introduced by Mauro Campus and interviewed by Francesca Mannocchi.

 

St James Episcopal Church (via Bernardo Rucellai 9) hosts the Roseburg Concert Chorale at 6pm on March 25, a 35-member community choir from Oregon, USA that will perform a diverse repertoire ranging from classical and spiritual to show tunes, conducted by Dr. Jason Heald, Director of Music at Umpqua Community College. Free entrance, with donations requested towards St James and its ministries.

Marion Baruch - Un passo avanti tanti dietro

Curated by Sergio Risaliti and Stefania Rispoli, the multifaceted career of the tireless artist born in Timisoara, Romania in 1929 is retraced, with her living and breathing textiles flowing across the exhibition space. Created using fabric scraps, her sculpture installations treat themes of identity, the patriarchy, the internet and our consumer society. The exhibition extends to Manifattura Tabacchi in collaboration with Polimoda, where environmental textile installations created from industrial textile waste play with the dichotomies of presence and absence, colour and transparency, while exploring emptiness as a space of freedom.
