Spectacular cultural venues open their days to the public for a weekend dedicated to stunning spaces such as Palazzo Buontalenti at the European University Institute. 750 places in 400 cities will be open to visitors for free, thanks to the volunteers of 350 FAI delegations and groups active in all regions.
Find out moreThe recently launched Magma Theatre in Le Cure hosts two Irish inspired performances in honour of the just passed St Patrick’s Day. At 4.45 on March 24, there will be a performance for children by Enrica Pecchioli titled ‘Irlanda in Fabula’, while at 8.45pm on the same day there will be ‘Danze Irlandesi’, a live concert of traditional music by the Clover Irish Dance studio.

To mark the start of the countdown, a rich programme takes place across the city, including flag-wavers, musicians and a procession of cyclists departing from Palazzo Vecchio, which will be lit up in yellow.

Jodice’s work, which will be on display in Florence for the first time, focuses on personal memories and experiences, particularly in his native city of Naples, and its rapport with ancient art and civilizations.

The Easter Vigil Mass on March 30 is held at 10pm in both Italian and English. On Easter Sunday, mass in English is at 10.15am and in Italian at 11.45am and 7pm.
St Mark’s English Church holds morning prayer during Lent at 9am on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, both in person and via Zoom. Holy Thursday is marked at 7pm on March 28, with the church open from midday to 3pm on Good Friday, and a service at 2pm. Easter Choral Eucharist is at 10.30am on March 31.
St James Episcopal Church holds a Festival of Cakes on March 10, the middle-most Sunday in Lent, to observe Laetare. The Palm Sunday service at 11am on March 24, Tenebrae in the Chancel is at 7pm on Holy Wednesday (March 24), Maundy Thursday is marked at 7pm on March 28, and services on Good Friday are at midday and 7pm. Easter Sunday on March 31 will involve a service at 11am, followed by a brindisi in the portico, and an Easter egg hunt.
The dance project by Virgilio Sieni brings both dancers and audiences into closer awareness of their bodies and their capabilities. Francesco Giomi brings Foosball to the stage on March 24.

The Children’s Lending Library hold their annual Easter party from 4-6pm on March 23, with crafts, activities, raffle tickets, books and refreshments.
Mosaico Church host an Easter Egg Hunt at Giardino Orto Dipinti from 10am to midday, costing 5 euro per child, or 10 euro per family, with face painting, games, prizes and more!
The third edition of Florentine Week sees cultural events, guided tours, fairs and markets, with tributes to Eleonora da Toledo and the Electress Palatine. Over 150 events celebrate the Florentine New Year on March 25, including a Fiorentino Quiz to test your ‘Florentineness’. The historic gates of the city will receive red lighting while activities include the ‘I am Florentine too’ photographic exhibition at the Oblate Library and arts and crafts in piazza Santa Maria Novella. The Cassettai Fiorentini award Pinocchio gadgets and a free ticket to the Toy Museum of Florence upon saying ‘Florentine New Year’, and there’ll even be a carriage ride through Casine Park.

Find out moreOrpheus, the Greek mythological figure, is explored in his past and contemporary interpretations, curated by Sergio Risaliti and Valentina Zucchi. 80 works from noted Italian and international museums, including the Louvre in Paris and the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, commence with Baccio Bandinelli’s sculpture of Orpheus in the main courtyard. The tragic myths linked to Eurydice, Hades and the Bacchae are also explored through printed volumes and musical works.

Kounellis, a central figure of the ‘Arte Povera’ movement, is widely known for his large structural works, which have previously been exhibited in Palazzo Vecchio and the Uffizi, while this exhibition sheds light on the design process behind them. The sketches come from the 1970s and 1980s, when Kounellis was the height of his career, and reveal the thought processes of the artist at work.
