The British-Kazakh abstract artist becomes the hotel’s first female artist in residence.
Debates, workshops and exhibitions on journalism today
Distinctive works by the German artist come to the two spaces, curated by Sergio Risaliti, featuring elements of European expressionism and American popular culture, with names like Jawlensky, Munch, Kirchner, Henry Ford and Walt Disney playing a fundamental role in the formation of his style, with aspects also drawn from Cézanne and Matisse. Rebecca Olsen and Adriana Barrios curate works by the American printmaker best known for his large-scale satirical woodcuts that draw inspiration from José Guadalupe Posada and Francisco Goya, recalling altarpieces and triptychs, but with secular subjects that express dark humour and sharp social criticism.

The electronic music fest pays homage to Luigi Nono, with Doriene Marselje’s harp and extraordinary sound action in ‘Foosball’, where table football becomes an instrument played by the public and competitive players. This edition is dedicated to the composer and experimenter Albert Mayr, who recently passed away. Spaces such as Frittelli Gallery, Cango Cantierei Goldonetta and Villa Strozzi host the unmissable performances.

Twiggy Pucci Garçon speaks with Sofia Chellini on ballroom culture in a free entry talk in Manifattura Tabacchi’s B9. The icon of the LGBTIA+ subculture born in New York in the 1960s is the international mother of the House of Garçon. The talk is in English, translated into Italian, with reservations via Eventbrite.

The theatre company Teatro delle Donne performs Dante: Inferno to Paradise on the Goldoni Theatre stage at 8.30pm on March 14. The documentary made for an English-speaking audience is in anticipation of PBS’s broadcast later this month. The Steeplechase production was directed by Emmy Award-winning Ric Burns, starring Antonio Fazzini as Dante, who will be at the event along with Riccardo Bruscagli and Christine Herring. Admission is free with open seating.

See the programmeWhite Rabbit, Red Rabbit by Iranian writer Nassim Soleimanpour is a theatrical experiment and reminder of the transgressive and transformative power of theatre. Since its premiere in Edinburgh and SummerWorks in 2011, it has been translated into more than 30 different languages. Taking place at 7pm on March 13, it will be performed by Giulia Cavallini at Teatro delle Arti.

The dance project by Virgilio Sieni brings both dancers and audiences into closer awareness of their bodies and their capabilities. On March 9+10, the programme features Dewey Dell’s I’ll do, I’ll do, I’ll do, with Cristina Kristal Rizzo Monumentum Da on March 16+17, and Francesco Giomi performing Foosball on March 24.

Pinocchio Live Jazz returns from March 2 to April 20, with a top-class live line-up at Associazione Via Nuove (viale Donato Giannotti 13).
Toscana Produzione Musica organizes 10 live shows that vary from Afro psychedelia and Latin beats to Middle Eastern music and jazz. The series kicks off with Bantu Continua Uhuru Consciousness on March 1, an energetic group from Johannesburg, followed by La Chica’s Latin American sounds on March 17 and Naïssam Jalal, a French-Syrian flautist on March 24.

The weekly dinner show at House of Nine sees entertainment by Arachel Dolphie and the Daisy’s Cuban Band. Featuring special guest shows once a month, the dinner and show is open to all culinary and music lovers from 8pm every Friday until May, and every Thursday and Friday in May and June.

From 8pm to 1am, 25hours Hotel hosts dance by Bioritmico and live painting by Florentine artist Luchadora in collaboration with Street Levels Gallery. An apericena buffet and cocktails by Elixir Barbarossa add to the experience. Tickets costing 25 euro (or 10 euro for a drink) are available via Eventbrite, and at the event.

Bring your old clothes and accessories to swap with others, learn how to sew buttons and little holes, and discover the art of upcycling, turning fabrics into scrunchies.
