September starts with a scattering of superb events from circus antics in Cascine park to the traditional Rificolona festivities that see children light up lanterns for the fun folk celebration. Here’s your best events of the week line-up for September 1-8.

Cirk Fantastik

Cirk Fantastik awes with avant-garde contemporary circus, setting imaginations alight with national and international artists performing all aspects of the art through a series of concerts, readings, talks and workshops, allowing audiences to enter behind-the-scenes. Be dazzled by comedy-acrobatic shows, pull up a pew for puppetry, and grab a glimpse of aerial dance and live music in between, letting little ones clown around in free-entry workshops for a fun family day out. Tickets from free to 15 euro.

MARKET

Fierucola del Pane + Kongo photography exhibition

Home-baked goods are honoured in a market-fair of organic products and manual crafts in the historic piazza from 9am to sunset. The occasion brings together brilliance in baking, as well as proving a social occasion as all those interested get together to celebrate farm produce and traditional crafts. While there, make sure to check out the launch of the Kongo immagini lungo il fiume exhibition at the Istituto degli Innocenti on the same dates, with photographs by Pierangelo Marella.

FloReMus

The sixth edition of the festival dedicated to Renaissance music with musicians from all over takes place from August 30 to September 11 with events divided into evening concerts with internationally renowned groups (full price 15 euro, two tickets 25 euro, reduced 8 euro), concerts à boire with emerging groups (5 euro), conversations with established scholars and musicians (free), and workshops dedicated to the Reniassance (free).

FESTIVAL

Fabbrica Europa

All the arts weave together for a September of dance, theatre, music, multimedia and performances across Florence in an artistic mix that sees 27 events across 22 days involving 120 artists. Make sure to catch free entry performances like Sabrina Mazzuoli’s From Interstellar to Calore in the Rose Garden at 5.30pm on September 9, as the immersive dance experience creates connections. Grab a ticket for Oumou Sangaré’s Timbuktu at Florence’s Teatro Puccini, with 15 euro granting you access to the musical performance that forms part of Festival au Désert.

Free museums

September 4 sees the return of the Sunday Metropolitan free museum entry, with residents of the city of Florence availing of the opportunity to visit some of the city’s museums for free, and a selection of other museums open to all. Choose between the top-class exhibitions at Forte Belvedere, Museo Novecento’s latest shows, the Uffizi’s ever-wonderful masterpieces and more, with tours of the San Niccolò Tower, workshops for children at Palazzo Medici Riccardi and Palazzo Vecchio, and a host of other cultural outings to enjoy. CONTEMPORARY

Alice Storyteller: Racconti della Mèria

Until September 24, the bookshop/cultural centre at via dei’ Pucci 4 hosts Racconti della Mèria, a free-entry contemporary art series bringing together more than 10 artists, with events varying from a live painting by street artist Mìles accompanied with music by Michelangelo Scandroglio and Luca Zenanaro, to poetic readings and film screenings.

Rificolona

A paper lantern festival celebrates the birth of Virgin Mary, with families setting off along the streets swinging the colourful lights and singing traditional songs for the fun-folk tradition dating back to the 16th century. The main gathering point is piazza della Santissima Annunziata, but you’ll find events for children organized at various sites including Giardino dell’Orticoltura organized by Associazione Heyart, and Circolo Vie Nuove.

Italian Chef Charity Night

16 chefs participate in the Italian Chef Charity Night on the spectacular terrace of Forte Belvedere, with funds raised going towards the UN World Food Programme for the emergency in Ukraine. The starred chefs and emerging talents including Riccardo Monco (Enoteca Pinchiorri), Paolo Lavezzini (Il Palagio del Four Seasons Hotel), Vito Mollica (Chic Nonna), Hagen (Saporium – Borgo Santo Pietro, Chiusdino SI),  Luigi Bonadonna (The Stellar), and Edoardo Tilli (Podere Belvedere, Pontassieve). Each chef will prepare their own dish, with an entrance fee of 25 euro going to charity.

Guided tour of the San Marco Museum

The museum occupying the historic Dominican monastery houses the largest collection of works by Fra Angelico (Beato Angelico) in the world. Formerly home to Fra Girolamo Savonarola, with architecture by Michelozzo, enjoy a true sense of what life was like in the monastery with a free guided tour at 3.30pm on September 5, included in the entrance fee of 8 euro (2 euro for European citizens between 18 and 25 years old).
