Awe-inspiring artisans bring their wares to the stunning setting, with a new selection of exhibitors in the grandiose gardens. This year, all those under 25 will have free access, with workshops on site for all. Don’t miss the live demonstrations, and make sure to take a look at the creations made by young people with disabilities. A special competition titled ‘Blogs & Crafts, Young Artisans and the Web’ is aimed at crafters under 35, and there’s a collaboration with the Ferragamo Foundation with private visits organized.
At midday on September 17, the picturesque venue sees renowned musician Matteo Castellan (pianist, accordionist and composer) perform some of his most popular compositions, along with much-loved jazz pieces. Taking place as part of the Firenze Jazz Festival, he will be joined by Luigi “Giotto” Napolitano (trumpet) and double bass player Veronica Perego. A buffet brunch in the garden accompanies the memorable music, costing 45 euro per person, wines excluded. For info and reservations, write to hospitality@ruffino.it.
The 20th edition of the event promoted by Open Lab gives access to the amazing academia at two of their sites in the city. Head to via La Pira 4 on September 15 if interested in exploring earth sciences and biology, not forgetting to check out the Museum of Geology and Paleontology. September 29, on the other hand, will be at the Social Sciences Campus of Novoli, with the departments of economics and business, legal sciences, and political and social sciences opening their doors. Events are free, with booking required for some events.
The popular contemporary circus festival returns, with this year’s theme being Eclettica. The “tribute to the incredible and multifaceted essence of human beings” manifests itself in ten days of contemporary international circus, concerts, world music, DJs, workshops, performances, coffee with the artists, a bar and food trucks in a fun-filled line-up that sees all kinds of everything.
From 9pm on September 15, the Bowie Bluebirds will take to the stage of the Hard Rock Cafe in piazza della Repubblica for an evening dedicated to the legend, David Bowie. The tribute band is made up by Cris Pinzauti on vocals and guitar, together with Federico Sagona and Lorenzo Bartolini. See what else is lined up this September.
The planetarium lights up as astrophysicists reveal its sercrets, bringing both younger and older audiences closer to astronomy. With illustrations of main scientific discoveries and an interdisplinary approach, the talks are suitable for ages 12 and above. Booking is free and mandatory, admission 8 euro.
From 6-7.30pm, take part in a Bloom-Ink experience with expert calligrapher, Betty Soldi, followed by an aperitivo in the glorious gardens of Villa San Michele, A Belmond Hotel. The botanical-focused writing event is inspired by the setting, allowing you to explore the beauty of handwriting. The workshop is in Italian and English. A new exhibition space dedicated to contemporary art opens at the mH Florence & Spa hotel, displaying sculpture, painting, performance, photography, video and installation. Artistis currently on show include Anna Dormio, Lori Lako, Matteo Coluccia, Max Mondini, Mohsen Baghernejad Moghanjooghi and Stefano Giuri.
The 30th edition of the creativity-centred festival sees music, dance, performing arts, and everything in between. With a contemporary vision, high-calibre national and international artists perform shows, concerts, site-specific creations, and lead workshops at venues like PARC Performing Arts Research Centre, Manifattura Tabacchi, Museo Novecento, Teatro Goldoni and Teatro Cantiere Florida.
Puppetry gets its moment as the festival led by Pupi di Stac sees 23 shows in 12 different municipalities, spreading from Florence to Reggello, Palazzuolo sul Senio and more. A journey into the magic of puppetry and all its complexities, a highlight this year is the collaboration with the Catalyst company for the special event at the Corsini Theatre in Barberino del Mugello, Giovanna d’Arppo. From Little Red Riding Hood to the Eco Monster Puppets, wooden pals put together shows for all ages. Florence-based sites include BiblioteCaNova and Villa Vogel park.
150 giant colourful animals run rife across the Barberino Designer Outlet in an open-air exhibition by Cracking Art. The works made from regenerated plastic will be placed along the river and all over the centre in tribute to the nature in which the centre is immersed. The free entry show is the perfect chance to take advantage of the great offers while enjoying the contemporary art creatures. The third edition of the short film festival returns with 13 titles on show, as well as masterclasses with professionals. The free admission film series takes place in the Oltrarno, and sees varied events as part of the programme.
The seventh edition of the international festival dedicated to Renaissance music organized by L’Homme Armé boasts 10 concerts, 7 talks, and 2 workshops in the line-up that takes place across various venues like the Museo Novecento, the San Marco Museum and the Church of San Bartolomeo a Ripoli.
Thursdays at the 25hours Hotel in piazza San Paolino are hopping with ‘Live at 25’: live music and DJs take to the outdoor courtyard from 7pm to 10pm/10.30pm for an evening of tunes in the chill setting. On Wednesdays, there’s a special offer on drinks: for the month of September, it’s Tequila! Aperitivi at the Alimentari dining space resumes on Fridays and Saturdays from 6-9pm (starting from September 8).
