OltreCittà – Utopia and Reality from Le Corbusier to Gerhard Richter

Cities are at the centre of the works that cover painting, sculpture, architecture, photography and music by artists of the 20th and 21st centuries. A vast variety of artistic interpretations dives into how the city landscape has been expressed by the likes of Le Corbusier and Gerhard Richter, through various mediums.

EXHIBITIONS

Contemporary art at Manifattura Tabacchi

Manifattura Tabacchi inaugurate three new exhibitions at 6.30pm on September 28. Photographs of the former tobacco factory by the internationally renowned Massimo Listri go on display until November 14 at Building 11. The final exhibition of the WONDERFUL! art research programme, titled ‘Even in a castle you can fall’ will be in the Caveau space until November 10, presenting the work of artists Friedrich Andreoni, Lucia Cantò, Benedetta Fioravanti and Giovanna Repetto. Finally, the Toast Project Space sees Amitai Romm’s ‘Influencer Sarcophagus’ until November 3, alluding to the design of systems for organizing matter. Free admission for all exhibitions.

Bright Night

The European Researchers’ Night is marked with a series of scientific events that are open to all, with a particular attention to budding researchers. The Europe-wide public event displays the diversity of science with the chance to try your hand at experiments and various other surprises spread across the city. This year’s theme is #BRIGHTWomen, with a focus on research dedicated to promoting women’s well-being.

Analog workshop

Community darkroom Camera38! leads a two-day event dedicated to analog photography on September 28-29, bringing you the opportunity to create a cynatope booklet cover in collaboration with Lotta Bindery Books. Brooklyn-based photographer Angela Jones then takes you through the creation of photos through the wet collodion technique.

ANTIQUES

Florence International Antiques Biennial

One of the most important events on Florence’s cultural calendar dedicated to Italian art is set to return with 80 galleries and 14 prestigious international participants. The 33rd edition of BIAF will be housed on the banks of the Arno at Palazzo Corsini from September 28 to October 6. Following a successful 2022 edition that attracted over 25,000 visitors, the 2024 iteration is expected to impress, showcasing the best in ancient, modern and contemporary Italian art.

Corri La Vita

Over 37,000 people took to the streets last year for the non-competitive running event which this year reaches its 22nd edition, held on September 29. Winding from the streets of the Cascine Park to the Loggia dei Lanzi in piazza della Signoria, funds raised go towards the prevention and treatment of breast cancer with participants wearing green this year with Ferragamo designed T-shirts. A mobile mammogram unit offers tests, with nutritionists, doctors and fitness instructors hosting a series of events in the Health Village in piazza della Repubblica from September 27-29.

One Day Exhibition

Base / Progetti per l’arte, formed in 1998 by a collective of artists, is a non-profit space by artists for artists, that is now closing its doors at via San Niccolò 18. The last event will be a one day exhibition, featuring works by Mario Airò, Marco Bagnoli, Massimo Bartolini, Vittorio Cavallini, Paolo Masi, Massimo Nannucci, Maurizio Nannucci, Paolo Parisi, Remo Salvadoria and Enrico Vezzi, curated by Lorenzo Bruni.

Cib’aria organize an evening dedicated to African culture, with a Senegalese cooking class and dinner by Ndyaia Diop Mariam and Abdou Diaw, a reading by Ornitorinco Bookstore, music by NY producer Dre Love, and a team quiz to learn while having fun. Vote from Abroad

Vote from Abroad is a non-partisan organization that will have volunteers in two locations in Florence available to assist US voters to register to vote and to update their registration if they are already registered. After ballots have been received, they will assist voters in submitting their completed ballots. The locations will be staffed weekly until the election, from 3.30-5.30pm at the Shake Cafè on via Cavour on Tuesdays, and from 6-8pm on Thursdays at Le Murate Caffè Letterario.
