The Florentine invites our readers to attend the next big TF event – on July 11, 2012 at 7pm, at the Oblate Library in Florence. TF’s Alexandra Korey coordinates the event organized by ToscanaIN with the support of The Florentine. It’s a great opportunity to meet others in our community and to hear about some very interesting ‘explorations’!

The theme is “Exploration: From Vespucci to Now” which links Florence with the United States. The theme of Vespucci Year is exploration; when our mayor Matteo Renzi (also an honourary member of ToscanaIN) presented the celebrations he
suggested we reflect upon what exploration means for us, now. A theme
that is open to all sorts of creative interpretation in many fields of
work, from art and science to travel and sound.

The event is part of the official calendar of the city’s Anno Vespucciano and has the patronage of the city of Florence. The speakers include Maurizio Seracini,
responsible for the research project in Florence’s Palazzo Vecchio in
search of the lost Leonardo da Vinci in Palazzo Vecchio; the renowned
travel photographer Kirsten Alana, Federico Moro, Senior Advisor for International Affairs del Robert K. Kennedy Center for Justice & Human Rights, Carola Haupt and Ilaria Gadenz of Radio Papesse and Marco Badiani from The Florentine. The evening will be opened by city councilwoman Cristina Giachi. They will recount their ‘explorations’ through various media.

The Florentine has dedicated a column and a blog to Vespucci Year,
refering to Amerigo Vespucci, the man who gave America its name. This
event is closely related to it, and is also a kind of example of how
America and Florence are connected and collaborative. The event always
sees attendance of both Italian and foreign residents of the region.
