The program includes DJ sets, Arabic dance performances, circus workshops, live music and stands spotlighting work by locally based artisans hailing from all over the globe. Via Palazzuolo’s shops will also host several photography exhibitions and installations. Entry is free. Forget traditional theatre. The Zauberteatro company will soon re-launch their signature summertime shows, with the Arno as a stage: actors perform aboard flat-bottomed Renaioli boats. This year, twelve performances (in Italian) spread from July to September will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1966 Florence flood. The standout play on the program is Manuela Critelli’s Come in America, set against the backdrop of the Florentine tragedy. Featuring actors Silvia Guidi and Fabio Mascagni, the show tells the story of a young couple that was meant to wed on the day of the disaster.  For booking information, see Zauberteatro’s website or call 055/5000640.

Vive la France! With the Charlie Hebdo shooting and the November 13 Paris attacks lingering in recent memory, this year’s Le quatorze juillet celebrations will be particularly poignant. Organized by Florence’s Institut français, the festivities launch on July 13 at 5.30pm with a series of itinerant dance performances choreographed by Anani Sanouvi and performed by the Opus Ballet in the Museo Novecento, the Marino Marini museum and Palazzo Strozzi’s courtyard. The finale will be the customary Bastille Day dance party in piazza Ognissanti (July 14, 8pm–midnight), complete with crepes and crowds. For more information, see the French Institute’s website.

A headlining act at this year’s Florence Dance Festival, Sankai Juku is one of the most famous butoh companies in the world. An art form born after the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, butoh is a type of Japanese theatre that incorporates a wide variety of carefully studied and controlled movements, strange imagery and often extreme aesthetic concepts. The ambitious show Between Two Mirrors will take audiences back to the origins of time, highlighting the interconnectedness of the whole universe. Feeling shy? Sit toward the back: the audience will play a key role in this interactive show. For more information and to reserve your tickets, see the Florence Dance Festival website.
