Italian Tapas: Oltrarno’s hidden garden

A mainstay for Oltrarno nights, Italian Tapas is a popular hangout where old meets new near piazza Santo Spirito. Based on a concept by brothers Marco and Matteo Laporta, the attractive locale pulls in an international and local crowd, especially in the summer with its shaded courtyard to the rear and outdoor seating along the centuries-old cobblestones.

Factor in the time needed to pore over the creative cocktail list. Our favourites? Porretta Mule is a refreshing blend of bashed lime, raspberry preserves, vodka, ginger beer and mint foam; Piccola Isola is an #instagood concoction made from gin, lemon juice, chamomile liqueur, rosemary syrup and a wild herb infusion; and white sangria generously served in an oversized glass.

Enjoy contemporary bites, such as grazing boards featuring cured meats from Siena’s historic Rapaccini butcher’s shop, cheeses from De’Magi in Castelfiorentino, juicy green olives, seasonal pickles and toasts with toppings. Or opt for something more substantial using fresh, quality ingredients, such as the decadent mini burgers served with gorgonzola and homemade sauces, octopus and potato salad, or a pumpkin, goat’s cheese and chestnut tart. Gluten-free and vegetarian fare is available.

Italian Tapas doubles as an events space. The Florentine recently held its Summer Aperitivo at the Oltrarno eatery, displaying our summer covers down the years alongside artwork ideated by students at IED Firenze.

This summer, Italian Tapas has found a second home at riverside spot Molo Firenze (lungarno Colombo 27). Serving a summer menu and hosting a range of events, check out the outpost from 5pm to midnight every day.
