Searching for a big sabato sera?  Only 35 minutes from Florence by Freccia lies a city of towers and tortellini, home to the oldest university in Europe. Whether you still have your student card or not, everyone’s young on a night out in Bologna.

Aperitivo
/ At Cocoa Bar Bistrot (via Altabella 14/a) a warm atmosphere and quality buffet, available with the purchase of one drink, attract locals. The apericena trend continues along via Zamboni where Caffè Zamboni (6) and Lab 16 (16/D) boast endless food and space for groups.

Dinner / At Zerocinquantello (via Pescherie Vecchie 2/b) the people watching is almost as good as the traditional tigelle bread, Parma ham and lasagne. At Osteria dell’Orsa (via Mentana 1) the tagliatelle al ragù has queues forming, so arrive early. For dessert, Bombocrep’s (via San Felice 93; via delle Moline 4) doughnuts, crepes and croissants attract crowds.

Dance / Hobby One (via Mascarella 2/A), pronounced “Obby One”, makes the most of two dance floors, hosting international DJs and events. Inside the 13th-century ex-prison of Palazzo Pepoli lies Qubò (via Sampieri 3), where pop tunes, three tiers and a young Italian crowd make any serata a celebration.

Breakfast / Pasticceria D’Azeglio’s (via Massimo D’Azeglio 69) fresh pastries and fun service, starting at 6.30am every morning, will re-energise you for the morning train back to Florence.
