A crucial match last Saturday at Florence’s Franchi Stadium between top-of-the-classification Milan and retrocession-defending Fiorentina did not go as Florentine fans had hoped.

Milan had vital points at stake that would keep it at the head of the classification against the other leading team Juventus, who are now battling to win the “scudetto” (the championship victory). But for Florence, a victory would have meant the necessary points to keep from being eliminated from the Series A championship next year.

Although the completely full stadium did incite the Fiorentina to play one of their most well executed games this season, it was not enough for victory. For 80 minutes the Fiorentina left little space for Milan to manoeuvre. But, it is not by chance that Milan is leading the classification, and it took just the last 10 minutes of the game for the team to score 2 goals.

Now, the Fiorentina must play the remaining 4 games of the championship as if they were in the World Cup if the team does not want to get knocked down into the Series B championship next year. Three of these games will be played against teams (Chievo, Atalanta and Brescia) that also risk elimination from Series A.

Hopefully, what many fans consider a spell of bad luck, will not follow the Fiorentina to these last matches.
