Coppa Italia Primavera 2010-2011

After their
March 16 draw in Florence, the Fiorentina and Roma met again on March 30 for
the finals of the Coppa Italia Primavera. Swiss striker Haris Seferovic scored
the first goal after 27 minutes of play, putting the Fiorentina in the lead.
After three minutes of play in the second half, Roma tied the match. Fifteen
minutes later, Cristian Piccini kicked a cross, but instead scored a goal. In
the second minute of overtime, Federico Carraro scored a goal after the team
was awarded a penalty kick. The Fiorentina won the match 1-3 and are now the
Coppa Italia Primavera champions for 2010-2011.

 

Mihajlovic to stay

To dispel
rumors that Sinisa Mihajlovic might be asked to leave, co-owner Andrea Della
Valle talked about the head coach’s two-year contract after the match against
Rome on March 21. ‘We respect contracts and we will stay together long-term.’

 

Viola players play
for their national teams

At the end of
March, many of the Viola players went to play for their national teams: Valon
Behrami for Switzerland, Adem Ljajic for Serbia, Alberto Gilardino and Riccardo
Montolivo for Italy, Adrian Mutu for Romania, and Manuel Vargas for Peru.
Gilardino was the captain for the Italian team in the second half of the March
29 match against Ukraine.

 

Behrami injured

During the
Bulgaria-Switzerland match on March 26, Behrami injured his knee; he is
expected to be out for three weeks.

 

Frey and Jovetic
returning

After long
absences from the Fiorentina, French goalkeeper Sebastien Frey and Montenegrin
striker Stevan Jovetic are on the mend and should be joining their teammates in
April.

 

Happy Birthday to
Cesare Natali

Fiorentina
defender Cesare Natali, originally from Bergamo, celebrated his 32nd birthday
on April 5. Natali has been with the Fiorentina since 2009.

 

A draw in Cesena

On April 3, the
Fiorentina went to Cesena in search of a win against one of the bottom three
ranked teams of the Serie A. Luis Jimenez put Cesena in the lead by scoring a
goal in the 18th minute. Seventeen minutes later Gilardino scored a goal to tie
up the match. Midfielder Montolivo scored a goal to put the Fiorentina in the
lead in the middle of the second half. Only five minutes before the end of the
match, Fabio Caserta tied up the match for Cesena thus giving each team one
point in the Serie A rankings. The Fiorentina ends the week in ninth place.
