In 2012, the Uffizi Gallery counted 1,770,356 visitors, placing it, once again, at the top of the list of Italy’s most visited of state museums. Only the archaeological sites of the Colosseum and Pompeii get more visitors (5.2 million entered the Colosseum, Foro Romano and Palatino last year).
Visitor numbers at other Florentine museums were also up: the Accademia Gallery, the combined Pitti Palace museums, and the Medici Chapels are all high on the provisional list of Italy’s top 50 museums released to The Florentine by the statistical office of the Ministry of Culture.
In June 2012, the Uffizi opened new rooms featuring Raphael and the Mannerists. Soon, the museum’s million-plus eager art lovers will find an additional two rooms of artworks. Expected to be ready by mid-June, the new rooms will house Roman paintings of the Cinquecento, in particular those of Correggio.
