With the first chill of autumn comes the Tuscan grape harvest, and whether you’re getting your hands dirty in the vineyards or waiting for the first sip of 2013’s elixir, wine is an essential ingredient of October in Tuscany.

In this issue, The Florentine raises a glass to the world’s top sommelier, Luca Martini, who guides enthusiasts through tannins, terroir and tastings (page 20). If you’re not into wine, why not pluck some of the vibrant leaves instead? This issue’s treat is patè toscano wrapped in vine leaves and pancetta (page 21).

Wine making is undoubtedly an art form, and in Florence artistic inspiration can be found on the label as well as inside the bottle. Through expat Patrik Lundell’s punchy designs, contemporary art meets vino (page 13).

The word is that 2013 will be a bumper vintage.

Salute!
