On November 25, a new 20-euro banknote will enter circulation.

With many fake 20-euro banknotes on the market, the European Central Bank is issuing a new model bearing enhanced security features. The 20 is part of the “Europa series” designs that already include 5- and 10-euro bills.

The head of Europa, reproduced from a 5000-year-old vase preserved in the Louvre, can be seen in a window near the top of the bill’s holographic bar, visible when you hold it up to the light. Tilting the banknote, the window also shows rainbow-coloured lines around the number 20.

Crisp and firm to the touch, the new bill is made of thicker high-quality cotton and is printed with raised ink. It’s also more colourful, and the number of initials of the European Central Bank are shown in nine linguistic variants—BCE ECB ЕЦБ EZB EKP EKT EKB BĊE EBC—due to the enlargement of the European Union in 2004 and 2007, compared to only five variants back in 2002. In addition, the word “EURO” is in three languages, not just Latin and Greek characters but also Cyrillic due to Bulgaria’s annexation to the EU.
