Now suburbanites will be able to enjoy weekend nights in Florence without worrying about curtailing dinner to catch the last tram home.

On January 21, GEST, the company that manages the city’s tramline, announced the implementation of longer operating hours at weekends. Effective January 22, 2016, every Friday and Saturday the service will be extended by two hours, with the last tram leaving Santa Maria Novella at 2am. The change comes following a trial that ran from April to September 2015, which saw approximately 20,000 people using the extending night hours.

In the statement issued on GEST’s website, CEO Jean Luc Laugaa commented, ‘Many people had asked for extended night hours of this service, especially at the weekend, above all after the successful trial last year…The tram is a safe and practical alternative to get round at night with the numerous events and entertainment that cities have to offer, as is the case in all European cities.’

The last tram leaves Santa Maria Novella at 2am and Villa Costanza at 1.34am. From midnight onwards trams leave every 14 minutes.
