If you’re looking for a useful way to commemorate International Women’s Day, adopt a woman artist and help share the story of her life and works by volunteering at the ‘Women Artists and Wikipedia Editing Marathon – 2016’.

This annual event, now in its third edition, is designed to help fill the gaps in Wikipedia content by crafting Wiki entries on the achievements of women artists, both historical and contemporary.

This annual event, now in its third edition, is designed to help fill the gaps in Wikipedia content by crafting Wiki entries on the achievements of women artists, both historical and contemporary. It is being organized by the Advancing Women Artists Foundation (AWA) and Syracuse University in Florence, with the patronage of the U.S. Consulate in Florence.  The Wiki-marathon will take place from 6 to 8pm on Wednesday, March 2 at Syracuse University in Florence (piazza Savonarola 15). ‘The editing marathon is open to art lovers from all walks of knowledge,’ says Dr. Jane Fortune, AWA’s founder and chair and The Florentine’s culture editor. ‘Participants can work from our Women Artists in Florence list or suggest their own artist, provided she has a certain level of notoriety as a professional painter or sculptor. Generating and sharing research on women artists is a primary step in their advancement. Throughout the centuries hundreds of creative ladies have made Florence a center for women artists—it’s time they become household names.’  No prior Wikipedia experience needed to participate. Attendees are required to bring their own charged laptops or tablets. Entries or edits can be in English or Italian and should be researched in advance of the event.
