The Pinacoteca of San Gimignano is hosting an exhibition on Florentine Benozzo Gozzoli, a Renaissance master and one of the most prolific painters of the Italian Quattrocento.

Though he is best known for his fresco cycle in Palazzo Medici Riccardi’s Chapel of the Magi, Gozzoli spent a productive four-year period in San Gimignano—among the most intense and fruitful of his long career. This exhibition offers the first comprehensive overview of that period. The standout work is an altarpiece depicting the Madonna and Child enthroned with saints John the Baptist, Mary Magdalene, Augustine and Martha, reconstructed in its entirety for the first time. Panels are on loan from the Musée du Petit Palais in Avignon, the Thyssen-Bornemsza Museum in Madrid and the Pinacoteca di Brera. The central panel is permanently housed in San Gimignano’s Pinacoteca.
Exhibition curator Gerardo de Simone explained that the altarpiece “brings out the happy marriage between the modern Renaissance dimension that Gozzoli learned from Beato Angelico, and the profuse decorative style {…} handed down by the late Gothic line of Gentile da Fabriano.”
