The organizers behind Florence's Finnish film festival "Una finestra sul Nord" will host a variety of initiatives and film screenings to celebrate 100 years of Finnish independence.

Events kick off on January 18 at 7.30pm with the inauguration of the photography exhibition "Strong women, weak light" ("Donne forti, luce tenue"), and guest of honor Hilla Okkonen, cultural coordinator of the Finnish embassy in Italy. The exhibition features 18 portraits of women who have shaped the history of Finnish cinema, beginning with Salaviinanpolttajat (The Moonshiners), a 20-minute work generally considered to mark the beginning of Finnish film history.

Other events on the program:
January 18, 9pm: Screening of 2016 documentary Kuun metsän Kaisa (Kaisa's Enchanted Forest)
February 8, showtime not yet confirmed: Screening of 1952 fantasy/horror film Valkoinen peura (The White Reindeer)
