The Tuscan landscape
has been devastated during the construction of the controversial high-speed
train (TAV) tunnel in the Mugello area. Local prosecutors recently launched a
probe to determine who is responsible.

Approximately
150 billion liters of water have gone to waste, 70 natural springs and 38 wells
have disappeared, water levels have been significantly reduced in 20 rivers and
three aqueducts have dried up.
Prosecutors estimate the cost of correcting the damage at 740 million
euro.

Magistrates are
compiling a list of politicians and public workers who will be questioned. The
list includes members of the regional councils in the 1990-1995 and 1995-2000
legislatures, among them regional president Claudio Martini, former regional
president Vannino Chiti, former provincial president Michele Ventura, former
provincial vice president Marialina Marcucci, former mayor of Pisa Paolo
Fontanelli, and former president of Peretola airport, Riccardo Bicchi.
