Boasting an 11.2 percent in-crease in sales, the Piaggio Group, based in Pontedera, Pisa, has decided to take one of Italy’s most renowned icons to India. After reporting its sales increase in the first quarter of 2010, the Piaggio Group, which consists of Piaggio, Aprilia, Derbi, Gilera, Moto Guzzi, and Vespa, said it would open a production plant in India to meet the demands of the growing Asia markets. ‘We’ve decided to make an important investment to produce and sell Vespas in India,’ said Piaggio president Roberto Colaninno, ‘but the Indian Vespa will be different from the Italian one.’ Colaninno said that sales in India and the rest of Asia have been positive and in line with their forecasts.
