As of July 1, 2011, watching a movie at the cinema will cost an additional euro. Part of a new bill to help fund the cinema industry, the extra euro, a temporary charge, is considered a ‘special contribution on the part of cinema-goers’ that will be used to help fund new cinema production. In effect until December 31, 2013, the charge is estimated to bring in an additional 45 million euro in 2011 and 90 million euro in 2012-2013. It will not, however, be applicable to theatres owned and run by the Italian Episcopal Conference.
