The Holy See recently launched www.news.va, a website to link its many social media outlets, including the Vatican Radio, Television Centre, and Pope Benedict XVI’s new Twitter account.

As of May 1, 2010, the pope can be followed on Twitter, just like Shaquille O’Neal and Lady Gaga, although (so far) the number of the pope’s over 13,000 followers, lags behind Gaga’s 11,357,330.

The pope has tweeted inspirational and religious messages along with a Merry Christmas message. The pontiff’s tweets have been in English and Italian only and will be translated into Spanish, French and Portuguese over the next few months.

To follow the pope, see @PopeBenedictXIV (there will be a note saying ‘Verified Account’ under his name).
