See a range of 20th-century still-life painting in Palazzo Pitti’s Gallery of Modern Art, which is hosting ‘Arturo Tosi: The Fruits of the Earth’ beginning September 22. The exhibition title ties in with the theme of Expo 2015, ‘Feeding the Planet.’
The show’s namesake was a Lombard painter working in the first half of the 1900s. The exhibition also features work by several of Tosi’s contemporaries and friends, including Felice Carena, Ardengo Soffici, and Alberto Salietti.
Tosi was known for playing a part in the Italian Novecento movement, founded in Milan in the early 1920s. After the experimentation of the avant-garde and Futurist movements, the Novecento redirected artistic energy toward order, taking cues from classical antiquity and embracing purity of forms. The Novecento principles were important for all of the artists spotlighted in this exhibition, though each reflects the movement’s influence in different ways. Tosi in particular is noted for his take on color: in his work, colors are more vivid and pronounced, and his treatment of color is comparable to that of the Expressionists.
The exhibition will be open until November 8, 2015.
