On April 28, 2016, the American International League of Florence held its annual Donation Day at the Palagio di Parte Guelfa.
Launched in 1975, AILO continues its charity work as a volunteer association whose main purpose is to raise funds with which to finance specific projects by non-profit organizations. Each spring, AILO awards and presents donations to selected charities at Donation Day.
This year’s recipients included ASS.C.A. onlus, an organization helping adults cope with post-traumatic stress; AIABA, a charity providing daily activities for autistic children; ANTEAS onlus, a volunteer organization assisting the elderly and infirm; Associazione Prima Infanzia, a residential home for severely mentally and physically challenged men and women; Arcobaleno, a centre giving assistance and support to foreigners and Italians in difficulty; Il Caniglio, a self-managed kennel housing abandoned and ill-treated dogs; ITACA onlus, a voluntary organization combatting the stigma of mental illness; L’Aurora onlus, a centre helping homeless women; and Progetto Villa Lorenzi, a day centre for children and teenagers coming from difficult home situations.
The event was attended by city councillor for international relations and cooperation Nicoletta Mantovani, who commented, “Through cultural and social activities, AILO encourages friendship and understanding among its members, who come from all over the world, and the Florentine community.”
The US Consul General of Florence, Abigail Rupp, who is the Honorary President of AILO, also took part in the ceremony. She complimented AILO members for all their commitment over the last forty years in helping those less fortunate in Florence and its province and congratulated them on their continuing hard work and community service.
The ceremony was followed by a reception at Hotel Tornabuoni Beacci.
