Children
attending Italy’s 224 schools with fruit
and vegetable gardens gathered their last harvest of the year in celebration of
Italy’s national festival of Edible School Gardens. The garden program,
through which students plant and tend crops, is sponsored by Slow Food Italy, following the lead of
Slow Food U.S. Through direct contact
with the land, children learn first-hand about food cultivation, biodiversity
and respect for the environment. With 49 schools participating, Tuscany leads the 19 regions with
edible school gardens, followed by Piedmont’s 41. For more
