Restoration of the large wooden crucifix that hangs
over the main altar in the Basilica of Santa Croce has finally been completed.
Made by the Master of Figline, the cross is believed to have been completed between
1317 and 1325. Funded entirely by the Friends of Florence, the two-year
restoration began in 2009 and cost 163,000 euro. The cross, which depicts a
painted crucified Christ, was treated for insect infestation and the painted
surface cleaned. For details on the restoration, see TF 113.
