‘Today marks the end of the major restoration project of the murals that Giotto and Maestro di Figline painted on the external and front fascia of the chapel,’ announced Stefania Fuscagni, president of Opera di Santa Croce. The restoration of Giotto’s St. Francis fresco cycle and Maestro di Figline’s Assumption of the Virgin Mary in the Santa Croce basilica was done by the Opificio delle Pietre Dure as part of an agreement with Kanazawa University in Japan and through the generosity of professor Takaharu Miyashita, who donated an inheritance from his parents in order to preserve the artistic masterpieces in Florence, where he lived for 11 years, between 1973 and 1984, as a postgraduate student.
