An ice-cream parlour and a winery have teamed up to create a new flavour of gelato: Chianti-flavoured sorbet. The business rapport between Gelateria Edoardo in Florence’s piazza del Duomo 45/r and Montespertoli-based Guido Gualandi winery started off with supplies of Vinsanto del Chianti Colli Fiorentini DOC to make zabaglione. The gelateria’s owners then decided to use Gualandi’s Montebetti Chianti Colli Fiorentini DOCG red wine as the key ingredient in a new ice cream.

‘In our gelateria we have 18 flavours and our Chianti Colli Fiorentini flavour lets us add a taste associated with Chianti and Florence, a connotation that immediately strikes a note both with our customers and with the many tourists who come into our shop,’ explained gelateria owner Andrea Montrucchio. ‘It took two weeks of experimentation to achieve a well-balanced flavour that actually stays true to the taste of the wine. The gelato contains 4% alcohol, is full-bodied and a light purplish-pink shade, guaranteed to win over both visitors to Florence and artisan ice-cream lovers.’
