The film Pompeii from the British Museum has now become a box office hit in Italy, too.

Released in Italy in late November, the film is the first produced by London’s British Museum. Since its U.K. premiere in August 2013, the film has been a runaway worldwide success with more than 1,000 cinemas in 51 countries screening it.

The film depicts the life of the citizens of Pompeii and Herculaneum at the time of the devastating eruption of Vesuvius in 79 BCE. Based on the outstanding exhibition, Life and Death in Pompeii and Herculaneum, and presented by the director of the British Museum Neil MacGregor, Pompeii enables audiences to relive the volcanic explosion, accompanied by music, poetry, and images of objects of everyday use of the time. Accurate reconstructions allow viewers a close-up look at the city that was wiped out by Vesuvius.

The documentary’s Italian release (in English, with Italian subtitles) amassed an average of 3,966 euro per cinema on its first weekend, an extraordinary figure considering that only matinée screenings are on offer.
