A group of bakers in Prato has concocted a sweet treat ahead of Pope Francis’s visit to the city on November 10. With its glossy white coating, enhanced by Vin Santo from Carmignano, and a golden interior, the treat evokes the Vatican City’s coat of arms.
Biscotti di Prato are a Tuscan trademark and one of Prato’s historic products. With more than 100 different varieties of biscuits, the first documented recipe of the Pratese cookie dates to the sixteenth century, found in an Amadio Baldanzi manuscript. It is allegedly from this recipe that Italy’s famous almond biscotti were created.
Those who want to try the ‘holy’ version of this Tuscan delight can get the recipe for the papal biscuits and sample the sweet treats at Confartigianato Imprese’s Il Filo Dolce, a desserts festival, on November 14 and 15 at Palazzo Buonamici in Prato.
