The holiday spirit is in the air (or maybe that’s just the smell of gingerbread cookies in the oven). If you’re in town or planning to come into the city for a walk along the sparkly light-soaked streets, be sure not to miss these amazing Christmas markets for all kinds of delicious treats and unique holiday treasures.

Santa Croce Christmas Market

A Florentine favorite among locals and visitors looking to get into the holiday spirit, the beloved German-inspired Christmas market is welcomed back to its cozy home in front of the basilica di Santa Croce. The piazza bursts with rows of vendors enticing audiences with gastronomic pleasantries and unique craft vendors. Warm up your chilly fingers with a pair of handmade wool gloves or hand hugging a steaming cup of mulled wine (we recommend a combination of both). On until December 18, 2022 in piazza Santa Croce.

FILE is a charity organization that aims to aid community members facing serious illness. This holiday season, they are hosting a charity Christmas market to raise funds for their initiative. Local businesses have generously donated clothing, accessories and artisanal food products to offer for sale at the market. Nestled in the ever-impressive Palazzo Corsini, the market will also have traditional panettone and pandoro for sale, which no Italian Christmas is complete without. Doors will be open from December 2-4, 2022 in Palazzo Corsini at lungarno Corsini 10.

The American International League of Florence is hosting a Christmas market dedicated to helping out local nonprofit organizations. Offering handmade crafts, books, home décor and more, you are sure to find something crafty and loved to take home for the holidays. December 7 (3-6pm) + December 8 (10am-6pm) at Tepidarium del Giardino dell’Orticoltura, via Bolognese 17A.

Indipendenza Antiquaria

Eclectic sculptures, precious porcelain and rare furniture are just some of the few treasures on display at this popular Florentine market in piazza Indipendenza. The market takes place year round, but proves especially useful during the holiday season to finding that unique gift for the awkward auntie on your list (or perhaps a new living room set for yourself). These funky finds will be ready for the taking on December 18 + 19 in piazza Indipendenza.

San Donato a Novoli

This market is perfect for holiday multitasking. Sitting right in the middle of Novoli’s shopping center, you can explore a plethora of vendors selling everything from decorations to jewellery, spices and more. Before retreating inside the mall to pick up your essentials, be sure to get yourself a snack from any of the Tuscan or Neapolitan food vendors. This market will remain open every day until January 8, 2023 in piazza San Donato.

Calling all fashionistas: Pimp My Vintage is coming to The Social Hub to satisfy all of your festive festa ‘fits. Peruse vintage clothes and accessories to find that perfect piece for whoever you’re shopping for (and maybe something nice for yourself). Be sure not to miss this one-day market on December 4, 11am-8pm, at viale Lavagnini 70-72.

Pick your presents for a good cause at this Christmas market. The Associazione Tumori Toscana offers a Christmas market spilling with designer clothes from brands such as Prada and Ferragamo. Along with hand crafted goods and a selection of artisanal food and wine, all of the proceeds for this market go directly to ATT. Their initiative aids in treating cancer patients in the comfort of their own homes free of charge. December 3 + 4, 11am-7pm in Palazzo degli Affari at piazza Adua 1.

Snacking and shopping, what could be better? This Christmas market offers a unique experience. Set inside a stunning villa, visitors can come and shop elaborate art pieces, handmade crafts, and artisanal accessories. Once you shopped, before you drop, replenish yourself with a treat from one of the delicious food trucks and graze while you enjoy your new finds. December 3 + 4, 10:30am-7:30pm at Villa il Padule, via del Padule 33, Bagno a Ripoli.

FSU Charity Market

Florida State University’s students are longstanding members of the international Florentine community. They are getting into the holiday spirit with an indoor charity market. Here you’ll find secondhand clothes, handmade accessories and decorations, and other miscellaneous goods. All donations will go to Made in Sipario Association, a nonprofit that assists young adults with intellectual difficulties. December 4, 11am-5pm at FSU’s Florence campus: Via dei Neri 25.

Ars Manualis

Christmas magic in Santa Maria Novella

For a gift-giving experience that is truly special, be sure to take a stroll through piazza Santa Maria Novella and explore the Ars Manualis art market. Here you’ll find tuscan handmade artisanal items that range from handmade ornaments, quilts, and cutlery, and more. Empoli’s stunning Christmas light show

The Christmas tree is truly evergreen this year as Empoli is celebrating the holiday season with sustainability in mind. In a new redevelopment project, CO2 emissions omitted by the city’s festive centrepiece will be calculated and offset by planting trees near Terrafino. Without sacrificing any holiday fun, the light installations and attractions will also be restored to reduce up to 30% of electricity consumption during use. Come and witness this important initiative from now until January 8, 2023. Empoli is an hour’s drive from Florence with a regular train service.

Arezzo Città di Natale

From light shows, enchanted forests, and even Santa’s current residence, the Tuscan town of Arezzo (one hour southeast of Florence) transforms into a charming holiday headquarters. The Villaggio Tirolese offers a northern Italian take on Christmas traditions with Tyrol-inspired delicacies and artwork to feast both eyes and appetite upon. Perhaps one of the most exciting attractions of the city is the out-of-this-world planetarium that will screen films and documentaries about stars and space. This Christmas city will be making magic from now until January 8, 2023. Arezzo is 90 minutes southeast of Florence connected with a regular train service.

Head outside Florence for a taste of Tuscan festivities with the OltreColle Christmas Edition in Toscana Resort Castelfalfi from 2pm to late evening, December 17-18, with a host of other festivities throughout the month. Art and great food are guaranteed, with the allure of the lights and the Christmas atmosphere making it well worth the (short) trip. The medieval village is transformed into a Christmas wonderland, with local crafts, traditional products, installations and performances spreading festive cheer throughout the village and Toscana Resort Castelfalfi. Purchase Christmas gifts, see the joy on little ones faces as they meet Santa Claus, enjoy the sounds of the gospel choir, and soak up the season from December 17-18 in Castelfalfi.

This hilltop Tuscan town hosts one of the largest Christmas markets in Italy. With over 60 vendors cozied up in traditional wooden huts, there is much to be explored. The fun doesn’t stop there as you can also take a visit to Santa’s “house”, where you can leave your Christmas wish list for him to look over followed by a pony ride and street food for everyone to enjoy. Until January 6, 2023. Montepulciano is 90 minutes southeast of Florence.
