Activities take place across Florence to mark Pink October, the month dedicated to breast cancer awareness, a disease that affects 60,000 people in Italy each year.

The LILT for Women initiative promoted by the Italian League for the Fight against Cancer holds free breast checks at the Misericordia in Fiesole on October 13, 17, 24 + 27, thanks to doctors Alessandro Filomena and Andrea Herd Smith. To book, call 055 576939. The LILT Firenze mobile unit was also in piazza della Repubblica on October 4 to carry out free breast examinations, with special guest runner and sports journalist Rocìo Rodriguez, the president of Lilt Firenze Alessandro Peirano, and City Councillor for Welfare Sara Funaro.

Biancone’s Neptune in piazza Signoria lights up pink in support, a gesture by the Municipality and Firenze Smart-Silfi spa. The face of this year’s campaign is journalist Francesca Fagnani, with the slogan chosen being “Prevention is always the right answer”.

President of Lilt Florence, Alessandro Peirano commented, “The main prevention tools that a person can use to fight breast cancer are regular checks such as ultrasounds or mammograms…monthly self-exams and follow a healthy lifestyle”.

To book breast checks, call the LILT toll-free number 800-998877 (Mon-Fri, 10am-3pm).

See www.prevenireconlalilt.it and www.lilt.it for more information.

Hard Rock Cafe Florence is raising funds for the Hard Rock Heals Foundation all month long through live music events and pink-themed merchandise, with some proceeds going to LILT.

Firenze in Rosa Onlus host a Pink Ribbon Walk from 5.30pm on October 22, departing from piazza Poggi and reaching Piazzale Michelangelo, where participants create a human pink ribbon, symbolizing prevention, and the Michelangelo’s David lights up pink in support.

From October 22-29, other sites also light up pink, including the historic gates of the city, the Puccini Theatre, and the loggia of Istituto degli Innocenti.

From October 23-27, The Social Hub in viala Lavagnini 70 will become a Pink Point, where the Firenze in Rose non-profit will offer free breast ultrasound checks (upon reservation) for women up to 45 years of age and over 75, given that they are not included in the regional screening programme. It will also be open to men with hereditary links.

October 23-28 will see the #BePINK campaign, inviting you to pinkify windows, balconies and storefronts.
