When the staff of Don Ernesto’s pizzeria in Naples heard Pope Francis reveal in a recent interview that what he misses most from his pre-papal life is being able to pop out for a pizza, they resolved to bake a pizza for the pope during his upcoming visit.

In an interview with a Mexican television channel on the occasion of his two years as pope, the pontiff noted the restrictions to his movement because of security concerns. ‘The only thing I would like is to go out one day, without being recognised, and go to a pizzeria for a pizza … It has been hard to change. But you get used to it,’ he told the interviewer.

On March 22, pizza-maker Enzo Cacialli managed to ‘deliver’ the pizza to Pope Francis as his motorcade drove through Naples.

In an interview with CNN, Cacialli said, ‘I gave him the pizza and, with a smile, he said “thank you.”’
