Each Saturday in April, at 6am, Siena’s Duomo will open the Facciatone, a structure among the remains of the unfinished “new cathedral” so visitors can take in the stunning sunrise views.

The spectacular views are part of a guided visit. After taking in the alba dall’alto, visitors will get an in-depth look at Duccio di Buoninsegna’s Maestà altarpiece (1308–1311) in the Opera del Duomo Museum. Art historian Francesca Fumi Cambi Gado, author of La Foglia d’oro: Il segreto della Maestà di Duccio, will explain the role of the angels in the famous artwork and the artist’s reasons for portraying them as young Byzantine princes. The visit ends with breakfast.

This special program of the Opera della Metropolitana runs from April 9 to 30. To book a place, email opasiena@operalaboratori.com.
