On December 22, 2016, at 3pm, the Court of Assizes, in the Sant’Ambrogio neighbourhood of Florence, found 27-year-old Cheik Diaw guilty of the murder of Ashley Olsen.

The 35-year-old American had been found dead in her apartment in via Santa Monica, Florence, on January 9, 2016. The autopsy showed that Olsen had received a blow to her head and had then been strangled.

Olsen’s parents and sister were in attendance at the ruling, as too were friends of the deceased, a popular member of the city’s international arts community.

The Olsen family lawyer Michele Capecchi commented, “At a time like this we cannot of course say that we are happy, but we are satisfied because the perpetrator of the crime was identified beyond doubt.”

The court sentenced Diaw to 30 years’ imprisonment.
