On Monday, July 16, Florence’s much-awaited Careggi Hospital to Villa Costanza tramline will open.
Renamed the T1 Leonardo line, the tram consists of 26 stops and runs 11.5 kilometres long; estimates say that the new line will transport approximately 20,000,000 passengers annually at four-minute intervals.
No date has been set for the opening of the T2 tramline from piazza dell’Unità to the airport, although media sources suggest it may be operational in mid-September.

Changes to buses
The extension of the T1 Leonardo line means important changes to Florence’s bus network. Four new bus lines will be operational from July 21: #33 (Rifredi Station Vasco de Gama – piazza Meyer – Via Niccolò da Tolentino), #51 (Grassina – Pian di Grassina/slargo Lippi), #55 (T1 Cascine-Puccini – Polo Scienze Sociali Novoli – Romito – Statuto Station – Poggetto) and #C4 (P.O. Palagi./piazza Ferrucci – Duomo (via dei Pecori). Existing bus lines 2, 8, 13, 14, 17, 20, 23, 24, 28, 40, 43, 48, 49 and 59 will undergo changes to their routes. Bus routes 4, 19, 54, 60, 81, 85, D and R will cease to run. These routes are valid until the opening of the T2 tramline from piazza dell’Unità to the airport.

Tickets
Tramline T1 Leonardo will be free for the first 15 days. Single tickets (valid for 90 minutes and purchased in advance) cost 1.50 euro; single tickets (valid for 90 minutes and purchased via SMS) 1.80 euro; single tickets (valid for 90 minutes and purchased on-board) 2.50 euro. A “carnet” of 10 tickets (valid for 90 minutes and purchased in advance) costs 14 euro. Monthly season tickets cost 35 euro, quarterly season tickets 94.50 euro and annual season tickets 310 euro. Discounts are available for low income individuals and students.
Tickets can be purchased from the ticket machines situated along the tramline.
