Five red benches have been added to Florence’s parks a few days after the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women on November 25.

Situated in green spaces along via Maragliano, viale dei Bambini and via Allori, as well as in Campo di Marte and Anconella, the two-metre aluminium and ash seats were donated to the City of Florence by Timber Lab, in the Casentino area of Tuscany.

In a press release, city councillor for welfare Sara Funaro commented, “We have a very worrying situation regarding violence against women. In Italy, a woman is killed every 72 hours … In addition to feminicide, domestic violence occurs every hour of the day, some episodes are reported while others are not. Having red benches draws greater attention to the issue and gives all citizens the possibility to stop and reflect.”

Phrases, which will be decided by a citizen survey, will be engraved on the benches to increase the focus on the issue of violence against women.
