The Unified Plan for Development at the Palazzo Vecchio, launched in 2011, has reached some its key goals with the addition of new museum rooms and reception spaces. Inaugurated on February 5, 2019, the museum now boasts 6,300 square metres of exhibition spaces, up from 3,700 prior to renovations.

The plan’s objective has been to increase the museum’s spaces through the rearrangement of visitor routes and enhance the services available to the public. “We will soon further extend the visitor route to the Salone dei Duecento,” said Dario Nardella, Mayor of Florence, “because thanks to a collaboration with the Quirinale in Rome, we intend to reunite the tapestries depicting the Stories of Joseph, commissioned by Cosimo I de’ Medici and woven on cartoons by Agnolo Bronzino, Jacopo Pontormo and Francesco Salviati.”

The Region of Tuscany contributed 490,000 euro to the project, allowing the museum to create a new reception for visitors and the complete renovation of over 600 square metres on the ground floor. Entirely new spaces include the rooms housing “Traces of Florence. Palazzo Vecchio narrates the city,” new rooms in the Apartments of Leo X, the Firenze Capital Room, a bookshop, a café and a new ticket office, as well as a nursery, additional bathrooms, staff rooms and a new coatroom with lockers, all of which are accessible.
