Ferrari celebrations in Florence

Ferrari is in Florence this weekend as the Maranello car marque celebrates its thousandth race in Formula 1 at the Mugello Circuit, an hour away from the Tuscan capital.

Two days of festivities began in piazza della Signoria as the scuderia wowed with a spectacular show, which included a potted history of the Ferrari brand, acrobatic dancing on the facade of the Palazzo Vecchio and gymnastic dancing in the piazza, futuristic video mapping, flag throwing by the Bandierai degli Uffizi, flute playing and a DJ set. But the real star remained the car with the celebratory livery designed for the 2020 Tuscan Grand Prix: burgundy, a faithful reproduction of the shade of red of the first Prancing Horse Formula 1 car, the 125 F1, which debuted in the Monaco Grand Prix on May 21, 1950. The contemporary wheels were accompanied by iconic Formula 1 race cars.

“Scuderia Ferrari’s 1000th Grand Prix is a very important milestone, therefore it had to be marked in a special way,” commented Piero Ferrari, vice chairman. “That’s why we decided to run a unique livery on the cars for this event, with the SF1000s taking to the track at the Mugello Circuit in the Burgundy colour first seen on the 125 S, the first racing car to carry the Ferrari name. Even the look of the race numbers on Charles’ and Sebastian’s cars will reflect the tradition of the past, giving the impression of being hand painted onto the bodywork, while the drivers’ race suits will also match the car colour.”

The cars will remain on display from 8am to 8pm on Sunday, September 13 (100 people at any one time). The show car will go on to be auctioned by Sotheby’s and the profits will be donated to Florence City Council to be used for charitable purposes.
