The crumbling former premises of the Oriuolo Theatre in front of the Oblate Library have been demolished to make way for a new cultural space.

Erected in the 1950s a short distance from the Duomo, the former playhouse occupied 300 square metres, which will now be replaced by a piazza-cum-urban garden with a cultural focus in tribute to the space’s previous purpose.

The 600,000 euro campaign financed by the city council includes the demolition and reconstruction of a multifunctional outdoor venue for exhibition and film showings.

 

 

Oriuolo theatre reimagined as a cultural urban garden

 

 

Closed for nearly 30 years and left derelict, Teatro dell’Oriuolo was one of the most dynamic theatres in Florence after the Second World War.
