David 140 marks anniversary of Michelangelo’s masterpiece at the Accademia Gallery

To mark 140 years of David's presence in the hallowed halls of the Accademia Gallery, Director Cecilie Hollberg has put in action a fascinating programme.

Specially built to house and protect Michelangelo’s David, the Tribuna at the Accademia Gallery was inaugurated in the summer of 1882. To celebrate 140 years of David’s presence in the hallowed halls of the gallery, Director Cecilie Hollberg has put in action a fascinating programme with both national and international musicians, art historians and intellectuals, paying tribute to the one of the most loved sculptures in the world.

The first event takes place at 7pm on May 9, with a concert by the renowned ensemble, Cappella de la Torre. They’re followed by violinist Théotime Langlois de Swarte on May 16 accompanied by harpsichordist Violaine Cochard. Other guests include Cristina Acidini, the Accademia del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Felipe Pereda and Aldo Cazzullo in the free programme that takes place at 7pm on Mondays. The series concludes on June 27 with author and performer extraordinaire, Patti Smith, captivating audiences in a special musical reading in tribute to Michelangelo’s genius.
