Florence continues to make the top spot in tourism rankings. The latest poll conducted by the world’s largest travel site, TripAdvisor, has named Florence the top European holiday destination for families.

In TripAdvisor’s inaugural 2011 Travelers’ Choice Family Award, which lists the top family-friendly hotspots in the United States, Europe, Canada, Caribbean and Mexico, Florence emerged as the most sought-after family getaway destination on the continent. Others cities in the top 10 were Edinburgh, London, Berlin, Barcelona, Rome, Vienna, Paris, Budapest and Istanbul.

TripAdvisor Travelers’ Choice winners are based on millions of real and unbiased reviews and opinions from travellers around the world, said a TripAdvisor press release. For this award, the winning destinations were identified through recommendations from some 20 million reviewers who traveled with families.

What do those travelling with children find so appealing about Florence? ‘Seeing Michelangelo’s David in person is an amazing experience for kids, as is walking through the Duomo the first time. Not to mention trying some of the world’s best gelato. At the end of the day, have a picnic on the Piazzale Michelangelo and enjoy spectacular views of this golden city,’ was among the reviews reported by the travel site.

‘TripAdvisor launched this new poll to help families from across the world organize their holidays; to help them choose destinations that could meet their demands,’ says Lorenzo Brufani, spokesperson for TripAdvisor Italia. ‘Florence and Rome made the top ten European cities, making first and sixth place respectively, and this makes us proud because it is a sign of recognition from millions of international travellers who appreciated our hotels and attractions.’
