Art lovers can view one of Giotto di Bondone’s greatest masterpieces from the comfort of their homes. Thanks to an initiative to document some of Italy’s finest artworks, Padua’s Scrovegni Chapel, which Giotto frescoed from 1303 to 1305, can be viewed free at www.haltadefinizione.com for the next six months.

Through a joint project of the city of Padua, Italy’s Civic Museums, the firm Haltadefinizione and Il Sole 24 ORE Cultura-Gruppo 24 ORE, photographers made some 14,000 high-definition images of the masterwork, an effort that took nearly a year.

The cutting-edge technology-the same used to capture Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper in Milan-gives a 360-degree view of the chapel and the 700 square metres of frescoes on its walls and ceiling. Also, the zoom function reveals details that cannot be seen with the naked eye.
