An elderly woman was recently robbed in her Florence
home after two thieves knocked her out with a drug-laced holy card.

The two female thieves stole 20,000 euro in jewels
from the 94-year-old woman after, as she told police, they forced her to kiss
the card, a santino depicting the Virgin Mary, which had been treated
with an illegal substance.

There has been a recent rise in such cases, police
warned. The same week, a group of Romanians attempted to extort another elderly
woman in Campi Bisenzio after kidnapping the woman’s cat. The seven suspects
demanded 20 euro in exchange for the feline. However, the woman called the
police after she made an appointment to swap the cash for the pet, and the
cat-nappers were nabbed.
