Montalcini on hand via video conferencing, computer algebra genius Stephan
Wolfram, mathematician Piergiorgio Odifreddi, astrophysicist Margherita Hack
and Edward De Bono, the founder of ‘lateral thinking’ and other internationally
acclaimed scientists gathered in Tuscany for the ninth annual San Rossore
meeting, held July 9 and 10.
Among other issues, the
scientists discussed development, peace and ethics, the G8 meeting in L’Aquila and the Avion Travel concert in Pisa.
Opening the conference, regional
president Claudio Martini said, ‘For nine years, this meeting has focused on
themes that are essential to contemporary society: water, food, climate,
health, energy, talents, equal opportunity-and today, science. In San Rossore,
we are conducting an open debate. Up until now, G8 meetings have always been
closed conventions that have not really provided solutions for our world. We
dedicated a meeting to the issue of climate change five years ago, and the
theme is just beginning to be discussed in the Conference of Copenhagen. We
hope that our message will reach its destination.’
The meeting honored scientist
and native Tuscan Galileo Galilei, but not from a commemorative standpoint.
‘Science is a central element for the development of the world,’ Martini told
the press. ‘We need to consider the ‘Four Ps: people, peace, planet and
profit.’
