Ukraine, how can we help?

The Women’s International Network hosts a monthly meeting with meaning this April as speaker Nancy Bailey discusses ways to help Ukraine and how to get humanitarian aid to those who need it. WIN Board Member Liz Wicks chats with Nancy Bailey on the topic, providing information and ideas on how to give refugees aid. All funds raised will be donated to the Robert F Kennedy Center For Human Rights Italy to provide aid to Ukrainian refugees arriving in Tuscany. The talk takes place on Zoom from 8-10pm on April 13, registration required.

Voices for Peace

Two charity concerts in aid of Ukrainian children take place at 8pm on April 12 in St Mark’s English Church, and at 9pm on April 13 in the Chiesa di San Salvatore in Ognissanto. The White Nights choir was founded almost 20 years ago in Zurich, and the international mix is made up of singers from Switzerland, Germany, Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Georgian Republic, Latvia, USA, Cuba, Mexico and more. The programme is made of works by Mozart, Rachmaninoff and spiritual and traditional music from Eastern Europe.  Admission is free, with donation requested towards UNICEF for their work with Ukrainian children.

Superstar

Art orientates around “the queen of dolls” in this display at Informacittà from April 8 to May 28. The group show pays homage to the famous Mattel doll, curated by Maria Paternostro and Silvia Minelli, featuring vintage catologues, games, stickers, and, of course, Barbies interpreted in art installations.

Fierucola in Piazza Santo Spirito

Piazza Santa Spirito fills with food for its popular markets. This April sees Fierucola del Carmine from 9am to 1pm on April 10, and Fierucola di Pasqua from 9am to 7pm on April 17, bringing together the best of Easter treats and typical festive goodies.

Finger Food Festival

The best of street food and craft beer comes to the Ippodromo Visarno. Over the three days of the festival, snack on delicious regional specialties from all over Italy, and dine on DOP and IGP locally made delights. Events are coupled with all the tastiness, organized in collaboration with Le Nozze di Figaro.

Oscar Ghiglia: The Years of the Novecento Italiano

The renowned Italian artist was firmly rooted in Tuscany, yet closely connected to European artistic developments at the time: the Novecento Italiano artistic movement evolved around the figure of Margherita Sarfatti in the name of a “return to order”, to which Ghiglia gave his personal interpretation, creating many memorable works; 50 will be on display as part of this exhibition. Born and raised in Livorno, Oscar Ghiglia (1876-1945) chose Florence as the site of his artistic endeavours, particularly influenced by Giovanni Fattori and innovations from across the Alps, include the oeuvre of Cézanne.

Firenze Flower Show

The fourth edition of the floral affair brings together exceptional plants for the popular market exhibition. Roam through the dreamy gardens of the historic Palazzo Corsini al Prato and admire botanical rarities, with sections dedicated to workshops, furnishings, craftsmanship, food, wine and wellness always linked to the bounties of nature.

Florence Korea Film Fest

This edition marks 20 years of the noted Italian festival dedicated to the best of contemporary South Korean cinema. To celebrate the occasion, 80 films and documentaries, plus many movie stars come to Florence with a vast and varied programme exploring all facets of South Korean culture. The festival is launched by the Italian premiere of Heaven: To the Land of Happiness by director Im Sang-soo (who is attending the festival) and closed by Ryoo Seung-wan’s Escape from Mogadishu, a true story set during the civil war. Sections focus on digital comics designed to be read on smartphones, a new addition to the line-up given that one in three Koreans are said to regularly read webtoons. All fans of Netflix’ Squid Game will be excited to learn that both the protagonist and director will be present at a masterclass on April 9: Lee Jung-jae and Hwang Dong-hyuk are the special guests for this 20th edition of the festival.

Children's Lending Library

The Children’s Lending Library’s holds their annual fundraiser Easter Egg Decorating Party on April 9, with egg decorating, crafts, games, refreshments and a raffle to raise funds. Taking place from 4-6pm at via Rucellai 9, entrance for one child costs 3 euro, and two children for 5 euro. Accompanying adults and children under 2 are free. Membership to the library is required, with sign-up available at the door, each family is welcome to invite a child who will only be charged the entrance fee. Reservation in advance recommended via the CLL Facebook page, or by email to childrenslendinglibrary@gmail.com. Don’t forget to bring a medium-sized hardboiled egg!

Stavros Ditisios: Madre Natura

Works by the Greek painter come to the Bellini Museum from April 9 to 16 in a display that explores the abstract expressionist elements in his work, and the inspiration he finds from nature. Ditsios studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, with a background in scenography and the direction of theatre and classical ballet.

Swan Lake and Giselle

Dancers from the National Opera of Ukraine perform Swan Lake and Giselle at the Tuscany Hall with soloists Olga Golitsya and Iurii Kekalo as part of the theatre for Ukraine solidarity project in support of the Ukrainian Classical Ballet of Kiev.

The Vernal Age of Miry Mirrors

The NAM – Not A Museum space at Manifattura Tabacchi displays works by Michele Gabriele in an intriguing show curated by Treti Galaxie. Surreal landscapes and eery sculptures fascinate with their forms made from silicone, epoxy resin, everyday objects and electronic components. Free admission.
